Detailed Project Description Genetics of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.
Background Inflammatory Bowel Disease is a multifactorial autoimmune/metabolic disease characterized by abdominal pain and frequent loose bowel movements. The prevalence of Crohn’s Disease is 28-108/100,000 and Ulcerative Colitis 39-117/100,000. Inflammatory Bowel Disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality and both direct and indirect costs associated with the disease represent a significant portion of the national health services budget.
Primary Objectives The objectives of this study are to recruit volunteers with Inflammatory Bowel Disease and describe the clinical expression of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and its complications within the sample population. As well, Newfound Genomics hopes to identify disease related genes and characterize the clinical utility of genetic markers.

Because Newfound Genomics must rely on the involvement of donor volunteers, you can make a difference. If you or a family member has Inflammatory Bowel Disease, your genetic information encoded within your DNA could help lead to a medical breakthrough! There is no cost to you, only a moment in time. Please help us help you.
