"Dr. Proton Rahman wins Biotechnology Leadership Award
ST. JOHN'S - Researcher, doctor, teacher and entrepreneur. These words
describe Dr. Proton Rahman, winner of the Nati Biotechnology Leadership
Award for 2004.
"Dr. Rahman is one of those rare people who can successfully balance his
career as an outstanding university researcher, his role as a scientific
entrepreneur and his medical practice in the area of rheumatology," said
Dave King, President and CEO of the Genesis Group Inc. and Director of
Biotech for Nati.
Dr. Rahman has an impressive publication record in the areas of
arthritis and lupus, and has won numerous awards for his research and
teaching. In 2002, he won the Young Investigator Award from the
Canadian Rheumatology Association and the Laurentian Award for
outstanding Canadian contribution in Immunology. In 2003, he was a
recipient of the President's Award for Outstanding Research at Memorial
University. He led the formation of a cross-disciplinary research
team, involving a number of Canadian universities, which was awarded $8
million in research funding to develop a Pharmacy Research Database
which can monitor adverse effects associated with prescription
pharmaceuticals. Also in 2003, Dr. Rahman made a significant discovery
relative to the Card 15 gene's role in psoriatic arthritis.
At the same time, Dr. Rahman continues to fulfill his role as a
teacher/researcher by teaching courses in molecular genetics and
clinical epidemiology at Memorial University as well as supervising
graduate students at the Master's and PhD level.
Dr. Rahman is also a co-founder of Newfound Genomics, a genomics
research company based in Newfoundland and Labrador that is working to
gain a better understanding of the relationship between genes, human
health and disease.
"The company has secured a multi-million dollar investment from the
private sector and has assembled state of the art sequencing equipment
in order to identify gene targets for complex diseases including
arthritis, psoriasis, diabetes and obesity," King said. A recent major
funding award will see the company focus on inflammatory bowel disease
in the coming year.
"Dr. Rahman epitomizes the new knowledge-based business person," King
said. "He is a pioneer turning basic science into applied technologies
for the good of society. Dr. Rahman is an industry leader spearheading
collaboration and partnership between the university and the business
community. He is the ultimate scientific entrepreneur and deserving of
the 2004 Biotechnology Leadership Award."
The award was presented to Dr Rahman on Wednesday, December 2 at a
Biotechnology Luncheon sponsored by Nati."
